Description

16 King Street is a building that likely started as two townhouses but has been converted into three shops. It dates from the early 19th century. The front is made of stucco on studwork, topped with an asbestos slate roof and featuring a brick end stack on the right. The layout was changed during the conversion to shops; it was probably originally designed as a pair of double-depth houses, each with a central entrance hall flanked by two reception rooms. The building stands three storeys tall and has a regular six-window front with original 12-pane hornless sash windows set within stucco architraves. It features rusticated quoins, a moulded string course at the second floor, and a moulded cornice at the eaves. The first-floor windows have moulded hoods on consoles with pediments. The shop fronts, added in the 20th century, include moulded cornices for the fascia. The interior of the shops has been altered in the 20th century and was not inspected.
