SW8244NE KING STREET 880-1/7/113 (West side) No.14 Barclays Bank

GV II

Bank. Late C19, by James Hicks of Redruth. Dressed granite and freestone; dry Delabole slate Mansard roof with stone dormer windows linked by a parapet. Corner site with doorway into a bowed corner. Roguish Baroque style. 2 storeys, plus attic over basement; symmetrical 2:1:2-bays clasping the corner with doorway into the central corner bay, bowed above. Main front has fat pilasters with rustications surmounted by flutes dividing the bays. A robust entablature, with fascia, breaks forward over the pilasters. Bays of the first floor are divided by pairs of near Composite columns with pairs of round-headed arched lights, with central columns, except single light over doorway. The parapet entablature breaks out from a modillioned cornice over the pairs of columns and these are surmounted by obelisks with ball finials. The cross dormer windows have elaborate shaped gables with heavy cornices all surmounted by open round pediments (3 windows onto St Nicholas Street, 2 onto King Street). Simpler bay to left of St Nicholas Street elevation, with doorway to left and cross windows. INTERIOR: ground floor altered C20, otherwise not inspected.
