Description
Barclays Bank is a bank building located on King Street in Truro, built in the late 19th century by James Hicks of Redruth. The structure features dressed granite and freestone, topped with a dry Delabole slate Mansard roof that includes stone dormer windows linked by a parapet. It occupies a corner site with a doorway into a bowed corner, showcasing a roguish Baroque style. The building is two storeys tall, plus an attic over a basement, and has a symmetrical design with two bays on either side of a central bay that clasps the corner, featuring a doorway that is bowed above.
The main front is characterized by stout pilasters with rustications topped by flutes that divide the bays. A robust entablature with a fascia projects forward over the pilasters. The first-floor bays are separated by pairs of near Composite columns, each supporting pairs of round-headed arched lights, with central columns except for a single light above the doorway. The parapet entablature extends from a modillioned cornice over the columns, which are topped with obelisks featuring ball finials. The cross dormer windows display elaborate shaped gables with heavy cornices, all topped with open round pediments, with three windows facing St Nicholas Street and two facing King Street. The left bay of the St Nicholas Street elevation is simpler, featuring a doorway to the left and cross windows. The interior of the ground floor has been altered in the 20th century, and the rest of the interior has not been inspected.
