Description
No. 16 St Nicholas Street is a shop with accommodation and store rooms above, designed by James Hicks of Redruth for Messrs Criddle and Smith shortly before 1884. The building is constructed of brick with granite dressings and features a roof that is hidden behind a parapet. It has a deep rectangular plan and is designed in an Italianate style with early Gothic details. The structure consists of four storeys and three bays.
The double shop front is flanked by pilasters leading to a moulded entablature. The first and second floors are dominated by a wide full-height central arch, which is flanked by narrow arches supported by giant fluted pilasters with stiff-leaf foliate capitals. Within these arches, there are two tiers of windows, including a central canted oriel window on the first floor. The central bay features windows with double transoms and coloured glass above the top transoms, while the other windows are horned sashes. A bold cornice runs beneath the fourth floor or attic storey, which has five windows under keyed round arches with pilasters in between, supporting the parapet entablature that has a turned balustrade above. The interior has not been inspected.
