Description
No. 1 St Nicholas Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 19th century and features a stucco front on studwork, with a dry Delabole slate roof and a brick stack on the left side. The building has a deep plan and stands three storeys tall, with a two-window range. Notable architectural details include quoin strips, a heavy moulded cornice at the parapet, and original 12-pane hornless sash windows set within moulded wooden architraves. The first-floor windows have triangular pediments supported by consoles, while the second floor features a moulded sill string and moulded hoods over consoles. The ground floor has a 20th-century double shop front with fluted end pilasters and consoles beside a high fascia. Inside, much of the original carpentry, joinery, and plasterwork remains on the upper floors, including a chimney-piece with a moulded architrave and corner blocks.
