Description

Lloyds Bank is a large, three-storey bank building located at the corner of Boscawen Street and Lemon Street in Truro. The building features a mix of classical and rusticated styles. The western section, designed by Henry Rice in 1872 for the Devon and Cornwall Bank, has a three-bay front facing Boscawen Street. This part is lower, with a rusticated ground floor, moulded strings, hoodmoulds over segmental arches, and a parapet with a balustrade. The eastern section, designed by Silvanus Trevail in 1891 for the Devon and Cornwall Banking Company, is larger and constructed from dressed granite freestone ashlar with freestone dressings. The roofs are concealed by parapets, except for a lead-sheathed dome over the corner turret and dressed stone chimneys.

The building has a street corner plan with the main entrance located at the splayed corner. In the classical style, it features two bays on Boscawen Street and five bays on Lemon Street. The shared corner bay includes a triangular pedimented porch supported by Tuscan columns. The corner is bowed on the first and second floors and topped with a domed turret that has three lights. The ground-floor windows are framed by plinths, rusticated piers, and a moulded stone entablature with a fascia. The upper-floor bays are defined by giant Ionic pilasters leading to a bracketed stone cornice and a parapet with a balustrade. The windows have moulded architraves, horned sashes, and triangular pediments on the first floor. The ground floor has been altered in the 20th century, but the rest of the interior was not inspected.
