Description

1 and 2 Cathedral Lane are shops with accommodation above, built in 1905 by architect Alfred J Cornelius on existing foundations. The building features a combination of glazed brick with freestone dressings and timber-framing, particularly noticeable in the jettied and pedimented second-floor gable. It has a dry Delabole slate roof and a brick and freestone lateral chimney. The structure has a rectangular plan and is oriented end on to Boscawen Street, showcasing an eclectic Elizabethan vernacular style.

The building is three stories high and has a one-window range. The ground floor includes shop windows topped with a moulded entablature. The first floor is characterized by freestone rustications and a tripartite mullioned window with horned sashes, set within a triple-keyed architrave that features a Gibbs surround and is supported by an apron with a blind arcade and guttae-like brackets. The second floor has a jetty supported by two moulded corbels, with elaborate timber-framing around recessed roughcast panels. It also features a segmental-pedimented oriel window with a two-light cross window and pilasters beneath a dentilled open pediment. The Cathedral Lane elevation is richly detailed and retains its original shop fronts. The interiors of the shops have been altered in the 20th century and were not inspected. Architectural specification documents and plans for this building by Alfred J Cornelius are held by the Cornwall Record Office.
