Description

22 and 24 Clapgun Street are two houses and a shop built around 1830. The structure is made of brick with a rendered top storey, all of which is color-washed. It features a 20th-century tiled roof and brick chimneys. This double-pile corner building has three storeys and cellars, displaying two bays facing Clapgun Street and three bays on Church Lane.

On the Church Lane side, there is a projecting plinth, a painted stone band at the first-floor sill level, and a painted stone string at the second-floor sill level. The eaves cornice is rendered and includes lead flashing. The lower storeys feature three-pane sash windows with gauged heads, while the second floor has 20th-century square top-hung casements that have replaced the original sashes.

The Clapgun Street front includes an early to mid-19th-century bowed shop window on the left, which has wooden glazing bars and a cornice. There is a central 20th-century door with a radiating fanlight set in a semi-circular gauged brick arch. The Church Lane front has two similar doorways, one of which is blind, along with a blind window panel at the centre of the top floor. The corner of the building is curved and slightly recessed, featuring a blind first-floor window panel and double curved doors. These doors are half-glazed and have a large rectangular fanlight with margin glazing, all set beneath gauged brick arches. There is also a cellar opening on the front facing Church Lane.
