Description

Apiary Gate is a house that was once a public house, originally dating from the 15th to 16th century, but mostly rebuilt in the mid-18th century and later. The building features a stone plinth, with upper walls primarily made of brick, all roughcast and color-washed. It has dentil eaves and a tiled roof that has a half-hip at the front, along with a central brick chimney. The structure is two storeys high with an attic and includes a two-bay original wing that runs at right angles to the road, with a half-bay extension to the right.

The front end of the main wing shows traces of first and second-floor band courses. There is a 19th to 20th-century bay window with a pair of sash windows on the ground floor, a 20th-century paired barred wooden casement on the first floor, and a small round attic window with a brick surround. The half-bay to the right has steps leading up to a 19th-century flush-panelled door framed with wooden architrave, and a 20th-century paired wooden casement above it.

Inside, the center of the original wing features a cruck truss, although the blades are missing below the first-floor level. There is a fragment of another cruck truss in the far gable wall. The central chimneystack has mostly been removed in the 20th century, but a winder stair on the same axis has been retained. The building also contains 17th-century stop-chamfered beams. Apiary Gate was formerly known as the Bell and Crown Inn.
