Description
The Cruck House is a house, originally comprised of two dwellings and potentially with agricultural use, dating to the 15th and early 16th centuries. It has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The lower walling and the right gable end are of rubble stone. The right bays retain timber framing with colourwashed brick infill, although these have been raised in brick. The left bays have been rebuilt in brick and are colourwashed. The roof is tiled, with a rendered chimney in the centre and a brick chimney to the left.
The house is two storeys high, with cellars, and has four bays. The ground floor has 6 windows with 2 and 3-light horizontal sliding sashes; the upper storey has 5. There are two flush-panelled doors, one in the centre with an arched timber lintel above, and another between the left bays within a late 19th-century wooden doorcase featuring moulded pilaster strips and frieze. The outer bays have cellars with 20th-century board doors to the front; the left bay also features a 2-light window, and the right has a brick-rebuilt front wall. Later outshots have been added to the rear.
The interior of the central bays shows cruck framing with three cruck trusses. The outer trusses have halved and pegged joints at the apex; the central truss has a yoked apex with a ridge resting on a short king post. All the trusses are roughly hewn and show no signs of smoke blackening. The right cruck bay retains original purlins and heavy floor joists. Later floors have been inserted elsewhere. The central chimney dates to the 17th century, but has an altered fireplace.
