Description
4 and 5 Duke Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop with accommodation above. It dates from the early 19th century and features incised stucco on studwork, topped by an asbestos slate hipped roof. The building's plan was altered around the late 19th century to create a shop, and it likely had a double-depth layout originally with a central entrance hall between two front reception rooms. The structure has three storeys and a two-window front, with the first-floor windows spaced closer together. The windows are 20th-century sixteen-pane sashes with horns. The late 19th-century double shop front consists of three lights on each side of a central doorway, along with return lights, and there is a 20th-century fascia over the original fascia. Inside, there is an early 19th-century open-well open-string staircase with a mahogany handrail that is scrolled over the newel.
