Description
No. 19 St Mary's Street is a former grammar school that has been converted into a hall and café. It dates back to 1730, as indicated by the date found on the internal plasterwork, and has been remodelled in the late 19th century and 20th century. The building is constructed from local rubble and features timber lintels. It has a hipped roof made of Delabole slate, with a similar roof behind the valley. The front roof is topped by a central octagonal wooden turret that includes a cupola and a weather vane. The building has a rectangular plan with the hall located at the front and is a single storey with a three-window range. The original windows are tall 18-pane hornless sashes with thick glazing bars, arranged with two windows on the left and one on the right. Between the windows is a wide doorway featuring 20th-century panelled doors and sidelights. Inside, there is a carved plaster aedicule on the rear wall of the large front room, along with various blocked openings in the side walls.
