Description

No. 1 Prince's Street is a former house, now used as commercial premises, dating from around 1850. The building features roughly-coursed rubble with granite and granite dressings, topped with steep dry Delabole slate roofs that have coped gables and tall stone axial and gabled lateral stacks. It occupies a tapered corner site and is two rooms wide, with an entrance porch on the Boscawen Street front. This porch provides access via a cross passage to rooms on the left, facing Duke Street, and rooms on the right, facing Prince's Street. Designed in a Tudor style, the building has two storeys plus attics and three storeys plus attics, with tall gabled elevations that include plinths, string courses, arched doorways, and mullioned windows. The west entrance front features a 1:1:1 fenestration pattern, with a full-height porch that has moulded four-centred arched doorways on either side. The left bay has wider four-light windows, while the right bay has three-light windows. The porch also includes a five-light bay window above a frieze of quatrefoils that returns under the four-light sidelights, and the larger windows have transoms, with most featuring hoodmoulds. The side walls are similarly detailed. The interior has not been inspected. This site was previously occupied by the Coinage Hall from 1351 to 1848. Notably, John Wesley preached here on August 27, 1776, and on other occasions. In 1851, it was the home of Nicholas Gill, who founded a successful drapery business. There is a plaque on the building providing information about Wesley.
