Description
No. 5 High Cross is a town house that has been converted into a café, dating from the 1840s. The building is constructed of dressed coursed Killas with some brick arches and features an asbestos slate roof. It has a cast-iron ogee gutter supported by bracketed eaves. The structure has a deep plan with a wide carriageway on the left side and stands three storeys tall with a two-window range.
The ground floor includes an elliptically-arched carriageway on the left and a late 19th-century shop front to the right, which has a panelled stall riser, an entablature with a moulded cornice, and consoles. The original windows feature keyed cambered brick arches, with 6/6-pane sashes on the ground and second floors, and a later horned copy on the first floor to the left. The openings are spanned by shallow brick arches with keyblocks, and the remaining sashes are hornless, except for the one above the carriageway. The interior has not been inspected.
