Description
The Former Assembly Rooms, also known as Cathedral Garage, is a building located on High Cross in Truro. It was constructed in 1772 or the 1780s and features freestone ashlar with a natural slate roof and 20th-century dormers behind a pediment. The building has a neo-classical style and consists of two storeys plus a 20th-century attic, with a symmetrical three-window front.
The central entrance has a round-arched doorway with an ordered tympanum, flanked by two smaller round-arched doorways that project slightly forward and feature entablatures, with fanlights and 20th-century glazed doors. Above the entrance, there is a mid-floor string that serves as a sill for three tall hornless sash windows with slender glazing bars, all set under flat arches. A central plaque displays a pair of Griffins with an urn, flanked by medallions of Garrick and Shakespeare. The triangular pediment above includes a plaque of Minerva. The interior was replaced during 20th-century reconstruction. While Pevsner cites the building's date as 1772, recent research suggests it was built in the 1780s.
