Description

22 Fore Street is a town house with a later shop, dating from 1686, marked by the inscription 'I. Trehauke' on the masonry at the first floor right. The building was refronted in the mid to late 19th century. It features stucco on studwork that slightly jetties over the shop, with painted stone set back on the right. The roof is not visible, but it has moulded eaves and cast-iron ogee gutters. The structure has a deep narrow plan and stands three storeys tall, with a one-window range plus a one-window short return. The windows include 4-pane and 2-pane hornless sashes within moulded architraves. The late 19th-century double shop front has a central splayed doorway, panelled stall risers with fielded panels, and slender turned columns flanking plate-glass lights and sidelights with caps. There is a tall 20th-century fascia under a moulded cornice. At the rear, there is a mid to late 19th-century chamfered three-light casement with glazing bars on the ground floor, which may replace an original mullioned window. Inside, there is a 17th-century open-well closed-string staircase with oak twist balusters, and the first-floor front chamber features a bolection-moulded chimneypiece and a panelled overmantel. This building is a notable example of an early town house on a narrow-fronted plot.
