Description
South View is an early 19th-century building located on Tarrant Street. It is constructed of red brick with grey headers in Flemish bond, while the north and west elevations feature nodular flint with red brick dressings. The building has a hipped slate roof and red brick chimneys, standing three storeys tall.
Notable architectural features include a brick modillion eaves cornice, two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the second floor, and one on the first floor. The ground floor and first floor have a canted bay, with a cellar door located beneath the ground floor window. There is a planked wooden section between the ground and first floor windows, which each have three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. Above these windows is a cornice with a scalloped bargeboard.
The entrance features a door with four moulded panels and an oblong fanlight, set in plain reveals framed by pilasters with elongated, fluted capitals and a cornice above. There is a one-storey extension to the west with a lean-to roof, constructed of red brick at the front and nodular flint with red brick dressings on the west elevation. The south elevation has a ramping parapet with ashlar coping.
The south elevation also includes a six-panelled door in plain reveals, surrounded by a moulded frame with a cornice above and two wooden steps leading up to it. This door, along with the door in the main block, is connected by a balcony featuring a brick retaining wall, ashlar coping, and iron railings with three ball finials. Access to the balcony is via a curving flight of six limestone steps.
South View is part of a group with Nos 36 to 64 (even) and Nos 70 to 74 (even), as well as Nos 83, 85, and 91 to 101 (odd).
