Description

46 Maltravers Street is a late 18th century building that is not shown on the 1785 map. It is constructed of red brick with grey headers in Flemish bond, and features nodular flint on the west side. The building has a hipped tile roof and a late 19th century red brick chimney with extensive cornicing. It stands two storeys tall, with a basement and attics, and has a brick modillion cornice.

The east elevation includes two doorways, each adorned with panelled Doric pilasters, a fluted frieze, a dentilled cornice, and a false fanlight above the frieze and tympanum area. The doorways feature six-panelled doors set in plain reveals; the south doorway has one brick step with ashlar, while the north doorway is equipped with a lion's head knocker. The ground floor has two segment-headed double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, one of which is flush framed. On the first floor, there are three flush-framed, segment-headed double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The building also has two late 19th century attic dormers with projecting purlins, overhanging eaves, tiled gables, tile-hung sides, and casement windows with glazing bars.

On the south elevation, there is one range of segment-headed double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, one segment-headed casement with glazing bars, and one segment-headed planked door leading to the basement.

46 Maltravers Street, along with Nos 46 to 62 (even) and the retaining wall at No 60, forms a group with Nos 45 to 63 (odd) and 77 to 83 (odd), including the pavements and railings.
