Description

38 Maltravers Street is a building dating from the mid-18th century, with some features from the mid-19th century. The south front is constructed of brown brick with grey headers and some grey stretchers, topped with a pitched tile roof that has projecting purlins and an ornamental bargeboard. A red brick chimney is present, along with Pulborough stone window sills, including one above the ground floor. The building has three storeys and attics, with the ground and first floors coursed into the brickwork and quoins of a raised pavement from around 1849.

The ground floor features a planked door set within deep reveals, with stopped chamfered embrasures, and a tripartite mullion and transom window also with stopped chamfered embrasures, containing casements with ornamental lead glazing bars. The first floor has the main entrance, accessed by the raised pavement, which includes a six-panelled door with a tripartite oblong fanlight beneath a lean-to tiled porch supported by ornamental wooden brackets. Next to it is a canted bay window with a hipped tile roof and casements featuring ornamental lead glazing bars.

On the second floor, there are two segment-headed mullion-and-transom windows, with the eastern window being bipartite and the western tripartite, both with casements, ornamental lead glazing bars, and stopped chamfered embrasures. The attic storey has one segment-headed tripartite casement window with ornamental lead glazing bars and stopped chamfered embrasures. The north elevation is made of nodular flint with red brick dressings, featuring casement windows with glazing bars. Inside, there is a mid-18th century staircase.

The adjacent buildings, Nos 14 to 34 (even), are sometimes referred to as The Parade, and Nos 34 to 44 (even) form a group.
