Description

Wyke House, located at 45 Maltravers Street, is an early 19th-century terrace of houses that includes the garden wall to the west. The building is rendered and features a ground floor with horizontal rustication. It stands three storeys high with a basement and area. Above the ground floor, there is a plain string course, and only No 47 has an eaves cornice with a blocking course above the entire range. The façade includes plain giant pilasters every other bay and eight sets of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars in moulded surrounds.

There are three doors, each with ten moulded and fielded panels, oblong fanlights, and early 19th-century knockers. No 49 has a porch supported by two unfluted Roman Doric columns, complete with a full entablature that includes mutules and a blocking course. The west elevation of No 49 features four storeys with one range of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, and another range of double-hung sash windows without glazing bars on the second and third floors. The rear (south) elevation has a first-floor verandah with an iron balustrade, slender wooden columns, and a cornice supported by consoles.

In front of the area to the north, there are iron railings with spear finials. The garden wall on the west side, which flanks King's Arms Hill, is made of beach flint with a red brick string course and rendered brick coping. Wyke House and its neighbors, including Nos 45 to 63 (odd), 67 to 73 (odd), and 77 to 83 (odd), form a group with Nos 46 to 62 (even) as well as the pavements and railings.
