Description

51 Maltravers Street is a late 18th-century building, marked on a 1735 map. It is constructed of red brick, with the center bay of the north front featuring grey brick headers and red brick dressings. The building has a hipped slate roof and red brick chimneys.

The structure is two storeys high and includes a plain brick string course. There is a brick modillion eaves cornice, and the north elevation has three bays, with the central bay projecting forward and topped by a modillioned pediment. All windows on this side are double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The doorway is flanked by Tuscan pilasters that have a pronounced entasis, and it features a dentilled pediment above a pulvinated frieze. The door itself has six fielded panels and an early 19th-century knocker, set in panelled reveals.

The east elevation contains five ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, except for two southern ranges where the windows are blocked with grey headers. There are two segment-headed cellar windows with glazing bars, along with three cellar windows that are also blocked with grey headers. The south elevation has two ranges of double-hung sash windows on both the ground and first floors, but the basement openings have been modernized.

This building is part of a group with Nos 45 to 63 (odd), 67 to 73 (odd), and 77 to 83 (odd), as well as Nos 46 to 62 (even), along with the pavements and railings.
