Description

Harley House, located at 55 and 57 Maltravers Street, features railings that date back to the late 18th century. These are terraced houses constructed from red brick, topped with a ripped slate roof. The chimneys, added in the late 19th century, are made of red brick and exhibit brick tumbling and extensive cornicing. The buildings rise three storeys above a basement, which includes an area. The brick eaves are complemented by a cornice with cyma recta modillions.

Both houses have six ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, although No 55 lacks glazing bars on the ground floor. Each house has a two-storey extension to the east and west, constructed with grey headers and red brick dressings, featuring a modillion eaves cornice and pitched slate roofs.

No 55 includes one double-hung sash window with glazing bars on the first floor and a doorway accessed by four ashlar steps. This doorway is arched over the area and framed by unfluted Roman Doric three-quarter columns that support a dentilled pediment. The door itself has six fielded panels and a semi-circular fanlight set in panelled reveals.

In contrast, No 57 has a range of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, with the ground floor window being flush framed. The door for No 57 is situated in the main block instead of the west ground floor window, and it is reached by six limestone steps. This door is sheltered by a porch supported by Tuscan columns and pilasters, which hold up a pediment adorned with a frieze featuring paterae and fluting. The soffit of the pediment is panelled, and the door has panelled reveals with a semi-circular fanlight.

The area in front of the houses includes a basement door, a modern basement window, and a double-hung sash basement window with glazing bars for No 55, while No 57 has been filled in except for one casement basement window with glazing bars. The iron railings in front of the area are late 19th century for No 55, featuring bulbous finials, while No 57 has late 18th-century railings with urn finials.

These houses are part of a group that includes Nos 45 to 63 (odd), 67 to 73 (odd), and 77 to 83 (odd), as well as Nos 46 to 62 (even), along with their pavements and railings.
