Description

This is a raised pavement situated in front of the even-numbered buildings 48 to 53 on Maltravers Street, extending to the corner of King Street. It likely dates to 1846, or shortly thereafter, possibly following the lowering of the road after a visit by Queen Victoria. The pavement is supported by a red brick retaining wall. While the paving in front of number 56 is limestone, the remainder is tarmac. Four ashlar steps are incorporated at the western end. The pavement is bordered by iron railings set upon 32 hexagonal posts, each topped with a shallow pointed cap. These posts are dated 1349 and feature a Norfolk lion in relief. The retaining wall at number 60, along with numbers 46 to 62, forms a group with numbers 45 to 63 and 77 to 83 on the opposite side of the street, including their pavements and railings.
