Description

58 Maltravers Street is a building dating from the mid-18th century, as indicated on an 1785 map, with south and west elevations from the mid-19th century. The east elevation features nodular flint with red brick dressings, while the south elevation is made of grey-painted brick. The building has a hipped tile roof and red brick chimneys. It stands two storeys tall and has a brick modillion eaves cornice.

On the south elevation, there are three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor, and two without glazing bars on the ground floor. The first-floor windows have modern louvred shutters, while the ground-floor windows are adorned with elaborate cast iron window boxes. The doorway features a shouldered architrave with a triple keystone and consoles that once supported a pediment. It has a four-panelled door with some glazing.

There is a verandah on the ground floor of the south elevation, supported by upright posts with capitals from which spring four-centred arches carrying a modern lean-to roof, and it has a tiled floor. At the east end of the verandah, there is a wooden porch leading to the road. The gabled front is supported on plain posts, has a tiled floor, and is flanked by iron railings with spear finials, approached by six ashlar steps. The door is planked and features a hand and laurel wreath knocker. Additionally, there is a retaining wall to the south of the garden, made of red brick with battered brick coping.

The building is part of a group that includes Nos 46 to 62 (even) and the retaining wall at No 60, which forms a cohesive architectural ensemble with Nos 45 to 63 (odd) and 77 to 83 (odd), along with the pavements and railings.
