Description

The Newburgh Arms, located at 72 and 74 Tarrant Street, is a mid-18th century building constructed of flint with red brick dressings and stuccoed on the south and west elevations. It features a hipped tile roof and red brick chimneys. The building stands three storeys high and has an eaves cornice with moulded brick modillions.

On the south elevation, there is a range of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, with the ground floor window featuring a keystone, and a segment-headed cellar window with iron bars. The south elevation also includes an oculus on the second floor, a double-hung sash window with glazing bars on the first floor, and a six-panelled door that is partly glazed and has two fielded panels. This door is set in panelled reveals and surrounded by a moulded frame, topped with a pediment supported by consoles, and is accessed by four limestone steps.

The west elevation has a range of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, along with a blocked cellar door. It features three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the first and second floors, and two on the ground floor. There is also a four-panelled door in a moulded frame, with a pediment taken on consoles and an ornate 19th-century lamp bracket in the pediment, leading up three ashlar steps. Additionally, there is a 19th-century door with two moulded and fielded panels, half-glazed at the top, in a plain reveal and accessed by one ashlar step, along with a segment-headed planked cellar door.
