Description

The railings to Nos 59 and 61 Maltravers Street are from the late 18th century and are associated with terraced houses. The houses are constructed of red brick and feature a hipped slate roof. They rise three storeys and have a brick eaves cornice adorned with modillions of cyma recta shape. The first and second floors each have three ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor has two.

No 59 features a doorcase with unfluted Roman Doric columns, a dentilled cornice, a pediment, panelled reveals, a semi-circular fanlight, and a frieze with a plume motif between the door and fanlight. The door itself is a six-panelled design. No 61 has a porch supported by Tuscan columns and pilasters, with straight entablatures on either side that include paterae in the frieze. It has a three-centred arch at the front with a fluted keystone and a cornice featuring unusual mutules. The door is also six-panelled and includes a lion's head knocker and a semi-circular fanlight within panelled reveals.

Additionally, No 61 has a two-storey extension to the west, made of red brick with a pitched slate roof and a brick modillion eaves cornice. It features a red brick chimney, a tripartite double-hung sash window with a segmental head on the ground floor, and a modern sash window above. There is a basement with an area and one basement door. The property is complemented by iron railings with urn finials.

Nos 45 to 63 (odd), 67 to 73 (odd), and 77 to 83 (odd) form a group with Nos 46 to 62 (even) and with the pavements and railings.
