Description

The coachhouse at No 48 Maltravers Street, dating from the late 18th century, is built of red brick with grey headers in Flemish bond and features a hipped slate roof. It has two red brick chimneys attached to the west wall that meet over a pointed arch. The building stands three storeys tall with a semi-basement and an area. On the first and second floors, there are two ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor showcases a canted bay window with three double-hung sashes with glazing bars.

Access to the porch is via three ashlar steps, which are flanked by Tuscan columns supporting three-centred arches, featuring a fluted keystone and some fluting in the spandrels, topped with a dentilled pediment. The entrance includes a six-panelled door, with two fielded panels, two glazed panels, and a semi-circular fanlight set in panelled reveals. The first-floor windows are adorned with Art Nouveau iron railings. The area is enclosed by iron railings with fluted balusters, necking, and ornamental finials, leading down seven ashlar steps to the semi-basement and five additional brick steps to the cellar. The semi-basement has one door under a quadrant vault that carries the front door steps and one double-hung sash window with glazing bars.

The coachhouse itself is constructed of red brick with a pitched slate roof featuring sprocketing. It has two storeys, a brick modillion eaves cornice, and two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor. There are also two sets of double doors: one planked and the other segment-headed with chamfered jambs.

The coachhouse at No 48 is part of a group that includes Nos 46 to 62 (even) and the retaining wall at No 60, which collectively form a cohesive architectural ensemble with Nos 45 to 63 (odd) and 77 to 83 (odd), along with their pavements and railings.
