Description
42 Tarrant Street is a late 18th-century building constructed of red brick, featuring gauged brick voussoirs and a hipped slate roof. It stands two storeys tall and has a brick modillion eaves cornice. The building is topped with a parapet that has ashlar coping, which conceals the roof.
On the first floor, there are three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor has two sash windows flanking a porch. The entrance features a six-panelled door, with the top four panels being fielded, and an oblong fanlight set within panelled reveals that include a panelled soffit. The original brass handle and keyhole are still in place.
The porch is designed with a three-centred arch that has a fluted keystone at the front, and straight entablatures on the sides supported by two Tuscan pilasters, one Tuscan column, and one tree trunk. Above the capitals, there are incised roundels, and the spandrels of the arch feature paterae, with moulded modillions arranged in groups of three along the deeply projecting cornice.
Access to the door is via four limestone steps, which are flanked by iron railings, with the eastern railing incorporating a boot-scraper. Additionally, there are two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars in the cellars, protected by iron grilles.
This building is part of a group that includes Nos 36 to 64 (even) and Nos 70 to 74 (even), alongside Nos 83, 85, and 91 to 101 (odd).
