Description

Number 16 Maltravers Street is a building from the mid or late 18th century, constructed of red brick with grey headers in Flemish bond. It features a late 19th-century pitched tile roof with overhanging eaves and a wooden eaves cornice supported by consoles. The gable ends have a brick blocking course with tile coping, which is supported on kneelers, and there are late 19th-century red brick chimneys with cornicing.

The building has two storeys and attics, with a three-window range. The two flanking windows have canted bays on both floors, each with double-hung sash windows that include glazing bars and moulded cornices above each floor. The space between the storeys is weatherboarded and sprocketed. The canted bays, which are late 19th-century additions, feature a cellar window at pavement level on the west side.

The central window range includes one segment-headed double-hung sash window on the first floor. On the ground floor, there is a door with four moulded and fielded panels in the lower half and glazed panels in the upper half, set in panelled reveals. This door is surrounded by a moulded embrasure with a triple keystone and a prominent pediment supported by consoles. There are five limestone steps leading up to the door, which is flanked by iron railings that include two bootscrapers, two baluster motifs, and one urn finial.

Numbers 14 to 38 (even) are sometimes referred to as The Parade, and numbers 14 to 18 (even) form a group.
