Description
Number 14 Maltravers Street is an early to mid 18th century building, as indicated by a Sun Insurance Company policy dated 1754. It is constructed of nodular flint with brick dressings and features brick canted bays. The exterior is painted, and it has a pitched tile roof along with a red brick blocking course at the gable end and a red brick chimney. The building stands two storeys high with attics and has a projecting wooden eaves cornice adorned with cyma reversa modillions. Above the ground floor, there is a plain brick stringcourse.
On both floors, there are two ranges of canted bays that contain double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. Between these bays is a six-panelled door, partly glazed, which has a moulded surround and a pediment supported by consoles. This door is accessed by three ashlar steps with flanking iron railings. On the north side, there is one casement window featuring lead glazing bars. The east canted bay includes a planked cellar door at pavement level. The building also has two attic dormers with hipped tile gables and casements that have diagonal lead glazing bars.
Numbers 14 to 38 (even) are sometimes referred to as The Parade, and numbers 14 to 18 (even) form a group.
