Description
Number 18 is an early 19th-century building located on Maltravers Street, on the site of a former theatre that opened on December 7, 1807, and closed on August 8, 1833. The building is constructed of stucco and has two storeys and a basement with an area. It features a frieze and cornice at the eaves, along with a blocking course. There is a plain stringcourse above the ground floor.
On the first floor, there are three double-hung sash windows with moulded embrasures. The ground floor and basement have a segmental bay that includes one door and one double-hung sash window with glazing bars at the basement level. The ground floor has three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, separated by Tuscan pilasters, and a full entablature above.
Each side of the bay has a door with six fielded and moulded panels and a semi-circular fanlight set in a round-arched moulded frame. The west door is accessed by four limestone steps, while the east door has six Bognor Rock steps. There are plain iron railings and footscrapers flanking the west steps, and iron railings with both spear and "Egyptian" finials surrounding the area.
Numbers 14 to 38 (even) are sometimes referred to as The Parade, and numbers 14 to 18 (even) form a group.
