Description

Porters Hall is a house that originated with a 16th-century wing, while the main part was rebuilt in the late 17th century and later altered and extended in the 18th century. The building features a timber frame set on a brick plinth, with whitewashed brick cladding on the left side and on both floors to the right, and tile hanging above on the left. The roofs are plain tiled, with a half-hipped roof on the right and a hipped roof with a gablet on the left. There are multiple brick ridge stacks on the left with oversailing tops, and an additional ridge stack on the right.

The house has a T-shaped plan, with the main range positioned at right angles to the street and the older projecting wing to the left. It is two storeys high and has a regular arrangement of leaded casement windows, including one 5-light and one 2-light window on the first floor to the right, and two diamond-pane 5-light windows in the wing to the left. A panelled door is located under a four-centred arched head to the left of centre, set within a 20th-century timber framed porch that has a flanking window to the left. There is a catslide outshot on the left side featuring one dormer window. The rear of the building reveals the framing of thin scantling.

Inside, the original framing is exposed, showcasing deep brick fireplaces on the ground floor to the left. The ceiling frames are visible on the wall framing on the first floor, which also features an early 17th-century staircase leading to the attic, complete with turned balusters and square newel posts on the side.
