Description
Sutton Place is a house located on Rectory Lane in Sutton Valence. It dates from the mid-16th century, with earlier 16th-century fragments at the rear, and has undergone alterations in the late 17th century, mid-18th century, and later in the 18th century. The core of the building is timber framed, with the front elevation rendered. The right rear wing is tile-hung, and there is an angled rear wing that features exposed framing and brick infilling. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and the building has a complex plan.
The main range has a rear return wing to the right, which is divided into two sections and includes a two-storey closet that projects at the join. The lower two-thirds of this section is constructed in English bond brick, while the upper part is rendered, topped with a plain tile roof. The angled wing to the rear left consists of three sections, with a short addition at the left gable end.
The front elevation, which is a later 18th-century facade, stands two storeys high on a stone plinth. It features projecting eaves with flat soffits and a moulded wooden cornice. The hipped roof has large gablets, and the right hip returns for a short distance with a lower ridge before rising again beyond the closet. There is a central corbelled multiple brick stack at the rear, along with a projecting brick stack on a stone base at the right gable end, and another projecting brick stack in English bond on a stone base beyond the closet on the right side of the wing.
The front has a regular arrangement of five windows, all of which are glazing-bar sashes in open boxes. Each end of both floors features a tripartite sash, while three 12-pane sashes are closely grouped towards the center. Ground-floor windows have shallow moulded cornices. The central entrance has a recessed panelled door framed by a moulded wooden architrave, topped with a flat shallow dentilled and corniced hood supported by consoles. A central cupola with a bell is also present. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to contain a moulded stone fireplace and panelling.
