Description

This is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with elements from the later 18th and early 19th centuries. It is timber framed and largely clad in red brick laid in a Flemish bond, with some grey bricks incorporated. The roof is tiled, and the rear of the main range has mathematical tiles on the first floor. The house follows a lobby-entry plan, comprising a three-bay timber-framed section including a stack bay, and a two-bay cross-wing projecting forward to the right. It stands two storeys and attics high, on a stone plinth, and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The left-hand roof is half-hipped, while the wing roof is hipped. There is a substantial brick ridge stack in the centre and a slender projecting stack to the right side of the wing. Two dormers are present, one with a triangular pediment and one hipped. The fenestration is irregular, featuring a 12-pane mullioned sash window to the first floor of a later 19th or 20th century rectangular brick bay to the left of the stack, a 2-light leaded casement beneath the stack, and an 8-pane recessed sash window to the gable end of the wing. The entrance door consists of four fielded panels, with two top lights, and a flat, dentil-bracked hood, against the junction with the wing. A rainwater head is dated CW. 1767. Inside, the exposed framing at the left gable end reveals jowled posts and an arch-braced tie-beam from an earlier building, which is narrower than the 17th-century house. The roof includes staggered butt purlins with collars and reused crown-post roof rafters. A newel staircase leads to the attic.
