Description
The Old Cage is a public house and restaurant, dating back to the 17th century, with extensions from the 18th century and restoration work in the 20th century. It is a timber-framed building, with colourwashed brick cladding at the base, rendered upper walls, and painted tile hanging to the gables, all under plain tiled roofs. A rear valley stack is located to the left, with further stacks on the left side. Originally two houses joined and extended at a right angle to the street, the building has one storey plus an attic, featuring two gabled casement dormers with ridge cresting and a flat-roofed single-storey extension to the ground floor. Leaded casement windows are found on the ground floor including a three-light and two single-light windows in the centre and to the left, alongside a curved eight-light shop window to the ground floor left. A boarded extension to the ground floor on the right features a ribbed door at the left end.
The left-hand return front (facing the street) has a projecting 19th-century section across the ground floor with two 21-pane shop windows in the centre and to the right, and a 15-pane window to the left. Part-glazed doors are positioned at each end.
Inside, some traces of the original timber framing remain, although the interior has been altered. The building is included on the list primarily for its group value, as a prominent feature situated next to the village pond and at the centre of the village.
