Description
St. Peter's Cross and Village Cage is a significant historical structure located on Godstone Road in Lingfield, dating back to around 1437, with the cage added in 1773. The building is constructed of coursed stone and features a hipped pyramidal roof made of Horsham slabs over a square stepped tower. Each face of the tower has rectangular openings, and there is a flat plinth on top where the former cross stood. An inscribed panel on the south face provides details about the history of the Cross and cage.
To the north, there is a cell with a planked door on the north side and a grilled opening above it. The Village cage was used for locking up wrongdoers and was last utilized in 1882. Together, the Cross and cage serve as an important focal point near the Village pond.
