Description
The Thatched Cottage is a barn that was converted into a cottage, dating from the 15th century and later modified in the 19th century.
The exterior features timber framing with white-washed rendered infill and a thatched roof adorned with ridge cresting. There is a plain tiled roof over a pentice, and the building is set at right angles to the street. It has a rectangular shape with a central stack and consists of two storeys with three framed bays. The windows have irregular diamond-pane leaded casements, with one projecting window at the center of the first floor, two on the ground floor to the left, and two in the pent roof extension to the right. A triangular-headed, ribbed and studded door is located on the left side of the extension, with an additional door on the left-hand return front.
Inside, much of the framing is exposed, showcasing heavy braces on the first floor.
The Thatched Cottage is listed due to its historical significance as a barn converted into a cottage, with a plan and fabric that spans from the 15th to the 19th century. It is likely associated with the nearby Grade II listed buildings, The Old House and Porters Hall, giving it group value.
