Description

Malthouse Farmhouse is a house that originated in the 17th century, featuring a range on the right side that retains a timber frame with brick infill in the rear gable. The right side has been rebuilt in brick, and the front bay of this range is incorporated into a later 17th-century front wing, which is dated 1672 with blue headers in the rebuilt left gable. This front wing is constructed of thin brick, with later brick used in the rebuilt eaves and gables. There are early 19th-century brick extensions at the rear. The building has old tile roofs and a large brick chimney with grouped square shafts at the center of the right wing.

The front wing is two storeys high with an attic and consists of four bays. The windows are irregularly arranged: the ground floor features a paired wooden casement on the left, a 6-pane sash on the right, and other blocked openings; the first floor has three 4-pane sashes and a blocked window on the right. The central entrance has double mid-19th-century half-glazed doors with marginal glazing and flush lower panels, leading to a lean-to tiled porch. There is a single-storey extension to the left. The right side includes a gable on the left with sashes and a paired attic casement, along with a lower two-storey bay that has a 3-light leaded casement on the left. The central lobby entry features a flush-panelled top-lit door with a flat wooden hood on brackets.

Inside, the older bays on the right have stop-chamfered spine beams, with the rear bay also featuring similar joists and large fireplaces. The upper fireplace in the rear bay has a plastered depressed arch that is stop-chamfered. A dog-leg staircase aligns with the chimney, with the upper flight showcasing turned balusters, a chamfered handrail, and square newels topped with turned knob finials. The front wing has a queen strut roof and steep curved wind-braces.
