Description

This tax post, dating from around 1860, stands approximately 3½ feet high. It features a metal, four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, topped with a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front, there is a cast City of London shield, along with lettering on the pier that reads "24 & 25/VICT. CAP 42". This post served as a Coal and Wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax origins tracing back to the 1660s.
