Description

The Coal Tax Post, dating from around 1860, stands approximately 3½ feet high. It features a metal plinth supported by four legs, with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band topped with a pyramidal shape. On the front, there is a shield of the City of London Corporation, along with lettering on the pier that reads: "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a marker for the boundary where tax was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
