Description
The Coal Tax Post, dating from around 1860, stands approximately 3½ feet high. It features a metal four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band topped with a pyramidal shape. On the front, there is a shield of the City of London Corporation, along with lettering on the pier that reads "24 & 25/VICT CAP 42". At the bottom of the pier, an oval cast displays the inscription: "REGENT CANAL IRONWORKS LONDON. HENRY CRISSER 1861". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where duty was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
