Description

This coal and wine tax post, dating from around 1861, was made by Henry Grissell. It stands approximately 4 feet high and features a chamfered pier on a front legged plinth. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top, with a City of London shield on the front. The pier is inscribed with the lettering "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42", and the maker's name is located on the rear. This post marks the boundary where duty was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
