Description
This coal and wine tax post, dating from around 1861, was made by Henry Grissell. It is approximately 3 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. A City of London shield is cast on the front, and the lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42" on a correcting plate. The maker's name is located on the rear. This post marks the boundary where duty was payable for coal, a practice that dates back to the 1660s.
