Description

This coal tax post, located at Mogador Road in Tadworth, dates from around 1861 and was made by Henry Grissell. It is approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front displays a cast City of London shield, and the lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". The maker's name is inscribed on both the front and back of the post. This structure marks the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a practice that dates back to the 1660s.
