Description

This coal and wine tax post, made by Henry Grissell around 1861, stands approximately 4 feet high. It features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier that has a moulded central band and a pyramidal top. The front displays the City of London shield, while the pier is inscribed with "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". The maker's name is located on the rear. This post marks the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a practice that dates back to the 1660s.
