Description

This coal and wine tax post, dating from around 1861, was made by Henry Grissell. It stands approximately 4½ feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top, with a City of London shield cast on the front. The lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42," while the maker's name is located on the rear. This post marks the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that dates back to the 1660s.
