Description
This is a coal and wine tax post, dating from around 1861, made by Henry Grissell. It is made of metal and stands approximately 3½ feet high. The post features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, which has a moulded capital and a pyramidal top. The front displays a shield of the City of London Corporation, and the lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". There is also a maker's name plate on the rear. This post is part of a series that marked the boundary where duty on coal and wine was payable, with the tax on coal originating in the 1660s.
