Description

This is a wine and coal tax post dating to circa 1861, designed by Henry Grissell. Constructed of metal, it stands approximately four feet high. The post sits on a four-legged plinth, with a chamfered pier above. It features a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. A City of London shield is cast on the front, and lettering on the pier reads “24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42”. The maker's name is inscribed on the rear. This post marked the boundary at which duty was payable, with coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
