Description
This is a coal and wine tax post, dating to approximately 1861. It was made by Henry Grissell and is constructed from metal, standing around 3 feet high. The post features a chamfered pier resting on a four-legged plinth. It has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. A City of London shield is displayed on the front, along with the lettering "24 VICT." The maker's name is inscribed on both the front and back. This post marks the boundary at which duty was payable, referencing a system of coal and wine taxes that began in the 1660s.
