Description

This coal tax post, located in Walton-on-the-Hill, Tadworth, dates from around 1860. It stands approximately 3½ feet high and features a metal, four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front, it displays the City of London Corporation Shield, and the lettering on the pier reads: "24 & 25 VICT.CAP 42". This post served as a marker for the boundary where tax was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
