Description

The coal tax post, dating from around 1861, is located opposite No. 376 on Godstone Road in Whyteleafe. This metal post stands approximately 4½ feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier. Above the pier is a moulded capital band, leading to a pyramidal top. The front of the post displays a shield of the City of London, along with lettering on the pier that reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where the duty was payable, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
